Depression afflicts thousands of people in our modern world.
There is a lot of negativity in the world and it is often easy to become depressed.
For many people they have to seek counseling and medication but can’t seem to get out of it.
According to Kabbalah depression afflicts you when you don’t let God into your life. It says “and you shall be happy before the Lord your God”.
This is not a commandment to be happy when in the presence of God. This is advice; it is telling you how to be happy.
When you put God in front of you then you will be happy.
You will be happy when you live your life understanding that there is a God that cares for you and is leading you.
When you acknowledge that there is a God and you focus on what he is giving you and focus on what he is asking you to do, not what you want to do, you will find that there is meaning in life.
Depression and Your State of Mind
Dr. Viktor Frankl wrote a book called “Man’s Search for Meaning.” Dr. Frankl is a professor of psychology and neurology, but more importantly he is a survivor of four concentration camps.
In his book he discusses how they survived such terrible conditions and he tried to understand how some people even continued to perform kindness for others.
He writes “It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us.
We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly.
Our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.”
When you have difficulties you have to understand that it comes from a loving God; he is trying to give you a challenge you can overcome to get to a better place or he is trying to teach you something, to give you a message.
There is meaning in the suffering in the world, joy comes from accepting that you will suffer and seeking the joy despite it.
Meditation as a Way to Deal With Depression
When you dwell on the suffering or that there is suffering you are missing a big part of the picture of this world. And that will make you feel that your life has no meaning, your choices have no meaning, that it’s chaos.
Your life will be one big struggle because you are only seeing a portion of reality, you are not seeing any of the good parts.
To see the whole you need to delve into the spiritual part of yourself. The life inside you.
Here are some small things you can do to begin to heal:
- Meditate. Sit with yourself in a quiet room. Talk to G-d like he was your best friend. If you have questions, ask him to show you how to achieve what you want and wait to receive the answer from within. Ask him to help you overcome your challenges. Ask him to help you understand. G-d can do anything. Talk to him and ask him for what you need. If you can also thank him for what you do have. Be grateful even for small things; that you have food to eat today, a bed to sleep in today; anything.
- Be with Nature. Go outside and look at the ocean or the sky for 30 minutes every day.
Create Joy. Once or twice a week put on some music that you like and dance. If you don’t want to actually get up and dance you can just sit and close your eyes and let the music fill your body and your conscience for 15 or 20 minutes.
